FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions, Answered Here!
Does it hurt your neck?
Countless hours of design have gone into ensuring the body area of the bellyak is as ergonomic as possible… over 24 prototypes were build to get the “nipple to knee” ratio just right. What is that? It’s a consistent curve from the chest area to the knees that allows for a comfortable prone position without stressing any part of the back.
I’m looking to get into paddling whitewater, is the bellyak for me?
The bellyak has gotten more people into whitewater with less stress than any other craft out there. The low center of gravity combined with the intuitive nature of paddling with your hands makes learning the nuances of moving water much more accessible. Most people are able to master the remount and roll within the first fifteen minutes of paddling a bellyak. It is a great tool for getting someone new into whitewater, or for a paddling connoisseur to have a new experience on familiar water.
How is it different from a Kayak?
At first, the similiarities are vast…similar shape, similar size, similar hull profile…yak at the end of the name. But that’s where the similarities end. On the bellyak you are not confined to one position. You can paddle prone, kneeling or seated, making the experience much more engaging and only limited by your creativity. You are closer to the water, and with a changed perspective comes a totally new sense of adventure. Rather than a paddle connecting you to the water, you are using your arms and hands to navigate. Webbed gloves provide an intimate connection to every current, allowing you to feel and move with the water in a way never before possible.
Is it harder than a kayak?
It is undoubtedly easier to learn to navigate a bellyak than it is to learn how to kayak. There is no cockpit on a bellyak, and thus no need to learn how to wet exit or to roll. The majority of bellyak users find that using their hands is intuitive and comes quickly. It is often more physically demanding than kayaking, since you have to rely on your hands/webbed gloves for propulsion versus a paddle.
Am I going to hit my face?
The bellyak is between 7.5 and 8.5 feet long, you have a lot of boat in front of you. Plus, the rocker of the boat allows you to ride up and over river features as opposed to hitting them directly. Even though you are traveling face first, your head and face are well protected from the rocks.
What if I want to use it on flatwater?
The bellyak works great on flatwater, it combines the best elements of boating and swimming. It’s a great shoulder and back workout, and it’s super easy to get on and off while in the water, making it the perfect craft for aquatic play. All of our models work on flatwater, but the Frequency has a drop down skeg which makes going straight much easier with less effort.
What should I expect my first time on a Bellyak?
Expect to have fun. Expect to get worn out in the funnest way possible. Expect it to be simultaneously more challenging and easier than you expected. And expect to get wet.
